Visas and Travel to Canada

International participants planning to attend the BIEN Congress 2026 in Toronto may require a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada, depending on their country of citizenship. We strongly encourage all international participants to review entry requirements and begin any required application processes as early as possible, as processing times can vary significantly by country.

Invitation Letters

Participants who require a visa will need an official invitation letter to support their application. The BIEN Congress Organizing Committee will provide invitation letters to registered participants.

Invitation letters include:

  • The purpose of travel (attendance at an academic and policy conference)
  • Congress dates and location
  • Hosting organizations and contact details
  • Confirmation that participation is unpaid and non-employment related

Plain-Language Checklist for International Participants

Step 1: Check your entry requirements

  • ☐ Determine whether you need a visitor visa or an eTA
  • ☐ Review official Government of Canada guidance
  • ☐ Check current visa processing times

Step 2: After acceptance

  • ☐ Confirm your participation and registration
  • ☐ Request and receive your official invitation letter
  • ☐ Apply for your visa or eTA as soon as possible

Step 3: If you receive Congress support

  • ☐ Confirm that your invitation letter includes details of:
    • ☐ Travel support (if applicable)
    • ☐ Accommodation support (if applicable)
    • ☐ Registration fee waiver (if applicable)

Step 4: Before travelling

  • ☐ Carry your invitation letter
  • ☐ Carry proof of accommodation
  • ☐ Carry return or onward travel details
  • ☐ Carry proof of financial support (if applicable)
